A Few Tips From Funny Card Makers

Find Your Funny | Make it "Sendable" | Just for Fun | Design for Laughs | Writing | General

Visit Shoebox if you want to see what really makes for great cards.

We're not going to tell you how to be funny, you already know that or you wouldn't have read this far. But we can give you a couple of hints that will help your idea see the light of the card shop. Don't freak out because not every card we create does all the things listed below. Not even close. But this will at least put you in the running for comedy central. Here we go...

A Few "Just for Fun" Examples

Inside copy:
Jan discovered if she pulled her "mom jeans" up high enough, she got a sexy new look!

I gotta buy some lighter underwear.

Make It "Sendable"

Yes, it's from you, but it can go to anyone. Try not to do anything that could be described as an "inside" joke, unless you mean "inside the northern hemisphere."

Think "send to someone else." Joke about things lots of people relate to, recognize, or totally resonate with — relationships, job, pets, sports, hobbies, recreation, etc...

Of course we'd love to see something we've never seen before and since we don't know what that is, you'll have to surprise us with how funny you can be. Make us spit coffee on each other! From laughing. (That should have been obvious.) [top]

Just for Fun

YourFunny*ness will be part of our Shoebox card line and Shoebox humor is real. It rings true. It hits you where it hurts (uh, in a good way.) Unique, funny, ridiculous, unpredictable. That's what makes it so great and why thousands of people buy them. That's easy, right? The only catch is that your card needs to be funny enough that it could be sent for any reason, any day of the year. We are not looking for birthday cards, "miss you" cards, or even "sorry your boyfriend broke up with you" cards. The job of your card is just to make people laugh at random, and who doesn't want that? Seriously, leave all seriousness at the door. We know you've got a funny bone so pull out all the stops and crack us up! [top]

Design for Laughs

If you're going to use a photo, it's a good idea to keep the subject matter from going too small. Our Shoebox card size is not all that big so hit the zoom.

Illustrations work. We like all kinds: primitive, tightly rendered, computer generated, collage, and more. Push that creative envelope and laugh it up.

We dig type design too. You can use your own unique hand drawn styling, fonts, or a combination of the two with an illustration on the side.

All kinds of artwork are in the running, so put your style out there and make us smile. We can't wait to see it. [top]

Writing Words

You can use words on the outside of the card or just an image — wherever your creativity takes you. BUT channel that creativity to words only for the inside of the card. Your funny will be there in black-and-white type, straight up. [top]

General

In case you skipped everything above, here's the gist:

  • Funny. (Humor that works on a card.)
  • Original. (It's your funny. Nobody else's.)
  • "Sendable." (All the funny comes together in a card people would actually send.)
